LIBERTY, Texas – The first trials for some of more than a dozen men accused of taking part in a series of sexual assaults on an 11-year-old girl could take place in March, a prosecutor said Thursday.
The case has divided and horrified the southeast Texas town of Cleveland, where authorities say the assaults occurred.
Twelve of the 14 men charged in the case appeared in state court Thursday morning for status hearings. Another currently in jail was represented by an attorney, and a hearing for the other defendant was set for later in the day.
State District Judge Mark Morefield said last month he wanted to set trial dates at Thursday’s hearing. But Morefield instead reset their cases for status updates on Feb. 6 after many of the defense attorneys asked for delays.
“The last and final” delay, Morefield told the attorney for one of the defendants, Cedric Scott, 27.

Nicki Minaj revealed last year that her father abused her mother and tried to kill her by setting fire to their house in an interview with Details magazine.
Q: Your father set fire to your home when you were a kid in Queens, New York. What happened?
A: He drank a lot and did drugs, and he would get violent when he did. When he set fire to the house, he was attempting to kill my mother. She got out before it burned all the way down. I’ve always had this female-empowerment thing in the back of my mind—because I wanted my mother to be stronger, and she couldn’t be. I thought, “If I’m successful, I can change her life.”

Although this story is old – from 2008 – it’s still very newsworthy. I doubt many of us realized that Charlize grew up in an abusive household.
